This was "hell" to write. It's been a very long time since I did straight prose like this, and the experimental narrative structure made it difficult to finesse. I also absolutely hate Team Contests, and probably wouldn't have entered unless Kaktus and Tufto approached me and let me force them to write my "blorbo", Yoshihide from Hell Screen. Still, it was a ton of fun to practice non-clinical storytelling again, and I hope you all enjoyed reading my tale :3
Besides Hell Screen itself, this story contains references to six other Ryūnosuke Akutagawa stories (some more obvious and impactful than others), and a single reference to Project Moon (Ryoshu my beloved). Bonus points if you can spot them!
Act 3 releases tomorrow; stay tuned!
Hello everyone! This is our first entry for the Public Domain Contest, co-authored by djkaktus,
Tufto, and I surrounding the character Yoshihide from the short story Hell Screen. There will be a total of three follow-up tales to the article, each being authored by one of us.
It's a bit of a last minute entry; we've been hit with some pretty several scheduling conflicts (me being in the US, them being in Europe), infections (kaktus got COVID and the Flu), and work-related issues, but overall I'm quite happy with how our story's turned out. I hope you'll be able to enjoy it, too. :)
Individual author comments can be found on their respective tales' author posts!
This is the theme for our team's Public Domain Contest entries! Thanks for checking it out!
While the theme is not intended for use outside of this context, I'm not gonna stop you. Still, I'd like to request that if you do use this theme for your own works, please change the title or a few details to make it distinct.
If you liked this theme, why not read our Public Domain Contest entries? :)

Since ratifying the Studies Policy, some points have been brought up about improvements that can be made to it. Of note that several of these suggestions came from Pedagon, who I appreciate looking over our policy after it was approved by staff, though I wrote up this O5 thread.
For changes which modify how a study is conducted, the changes will apply retroactively (meaning currently-running studies will need to comply with the new policy).
Change this clause to the following one:
Any student wishing to conduct a study on any of our official platforms
Anyone wishing to conduct a study for academic purposes on any of our official platforms that includes an element of interaction with users or posting of recruitment materials
Change this clause to the following one:
A clear illustration of what information on users will be gathered, and how it will be used.
A brief/clear description of what or how information on users may be gathered/collected, and what the current plans are for how it will be used.
Change this clause to the following one:
A clear statement that all information collected for the purposes of the study will be publicly available.
A clear statement of recognition that all information collected for the purposes of the study will be publicly available on all recruitment materials (or an equivalent statement of the actual plans if they can be guaranteed).
Change this clause to the following one:
A clear illustration of risks and or benefits associated with participating. For example, how are you helping advance a study subject's understanding of or engagement with the community?
A clear illustration of benefits, risks, and how risks will be minimized in the study. For example, how are you helping advance a study subject's understanding of, or engagement with, the community?
Change this clause to the following one:
A clear definition of the tools being used to carry out research. This is essentially to filter out unsafe platforms such as Google Forms.
A clear definition of the tools being used during research participation. This is essentially to filter out unsafe platforms such as Google Forms.
Change this clause to the following one:
The research project must get its own account, to distinguish from any personal use of the wiki participating researcher(s) are engaged in.
Researchers must engage through the use of a designated account with limitation of actions it can take, to distinguish from any personal use of the wiki participating researcher(s) are engaged in. Research accounts may be made per study or per researcher upon consultation with site staff.
"Academic Student [name]"
This should be "AcademicStudent[name]" due to length constraints.
We should add clauses regarding account deletion and profile pictures:
4. The research account must have an appropriate and non-default profile picture set.
5. The research account may not be deleted or renamed after the study is complete, to be able to serve as a historical reference.
This discussion will continue for one week.
I love theories like this. Very well put together
this thread is about beans
Let he who dares peer between his fingers be spared, and let heaven deliver him, but let die he who would die, for he who would live shall live against all odds.
And I live by that.
This article is based off of several true stories, both from my own life and from others.
I have been writing this article consistently for nearly half a year, and have been brainstorming it for several months longer. It was born out of an intense depression and disgust that has pervaded every sense of my being and has overwhelmed all of my thoughts for the past year. There have been very few days in 2024 where I have not gone thinking about this draft, where I have not been replaying its scenes over and over and over in my mind endlessly. Some days I could barely function because thinking about this draft would completely knock the wind out of me and prevent me from meaningfully engaging with the world. I would lay in bed for several hours, feeling the weight of gravity pull me into my sheets with a force willpower could only barely break.
That's probably a bit overdramatic, but it's mostly true. I have no idea where this all originally came from. This overwhelming sense of dread and horror that comes with peering at the world in all its raw, ugly depravity is very hard to shake. Once it takes root it's impossible to get rid of it, because you begin to see it in every single thing. It drags you down to the lowest depths and keeps you there, muddling your experience of the world and your ability to connect with those around you, especially if they cannot see what you can. If they can't feel the sludge beneath the tiles on the floor they walk on, even when it cries out in pain.
I think after a year and many, many hours of work, I can finally push myself to shake off the dread enough to move again. I can finally lift my eyes up and see what lies ahead instead of focusing on what's been cemented behind us. But I don't think the dread is ever going to fully go away. It's still present, even if diminished. And I don't think it'll go away for many, many years; only when everyone finally begins to wake up to the toxins that pervade society and choose to reject them. My desire is that, with this piece, I can give you at least a little of that antivenom, if you didn't already have it.
With this, I have finally brought to rest my endless cycle of despair. Now, I hope, I can bequeath it to you.
